Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball player D.J. Mitchell has signed with Florida International University, making him the second Blue Dragon to decide where he will play next season.

Mitchell joins Saquan Singleton (New Mexico) as 2020 sophomores who have signed national letters of intent with four-year programs.

Mitchell is the first Blue Dragon men’s basketball player ever to sign with the FIU men’s basketball program.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-4 guard from Washington, D.C., played a key role in his two seasons with the Blue Dragons. This past season, Mitchell averaged a team high 14.3 points per game while playing in 30 of 32 games, starting in 24. He scored in double figures 22 times, and set a career high in points (31) against Northwest Kansas Tech on Feb. 5. Mitchell shot 42.2 percent from the field, and shot 84.8 percent from the free-throw line. He also averaged 4.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1 steal per game.

Mitchell completed his career with 116 3-point field goals, which is fifth most in Blue Dragon men’s basketball history. His 83.8 percentage from the free-throw line ranked third highest in Blue Dragon history. Mitchell was also named honorable mention all-Jayhawk West this past season.
