Saving Grades

By Rachel Lyons / Staff Writer

Tis’ the season for mountains of homework, frequent tests, and the reality that finals are less than a month away.

Sometimes, trying learning material for a class reaches the point where help from another person is one of the few solutions that help everything make sense.

The good news for Hutchinson Community College students who seek this kind of help is that Rimmer Learning Resource Center, better known as the campus library or RLRC, offers tutoring services that can help with most campus classes.

While some believe that RLRC only offers Math and English help through the Math Lab and Front Desk, respectively, there are many other classes that they can also help with.

According to RLRC records, students can receive help in Accounting, Math, and English any day of the week during any open hour through the drop-in Math Lab and RLRC front desk.

Students may also make a request through the front desk or the Tutor Services page in LearningZone for an individual tutor for these subjects and numerous other subjects, including Business, Technology, History/Government, and more.

RLRC is also the driving force behind supplemental instruction for Human Anatomy and Physiology and General Biology that is provided in at set times during the week in either the Science Hall or RLRC.

Students may also seek the help of the tutors who are posted to the Science Hall commons for extra drop-in help with Science or Math on set days during the week.

When using RLRC tutoring services students, should keep in mind that the primary task of a tutor by RLRC training materials is to help a student comprehend and learn to work through problems independently.

The RLRC Tutor Training indicates that “A tutor is an academic guide and coach, partner and observer, helping a student gain the study skills and confidence to learn independently. A tutor is neither a teacher nor a counselor.”

RLRC provides tutoring services from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Sunday.

The Math Lab is in RLRC’s Room 109, with an accounting tutor based in the lab during set hours, and Writing Help is available at RLRC’s front desk located just inside of the west entrance.

All tutoring provided through RLRC is free to HutchCC students, although students must sign in when using the Math Lab or Writing Tutor at the front desk.
