Many college students both here in Hutchinson and across the world have grown up playing Pokémon. Many stopped in middle school, a few more in high school, and some have picked it back up again.

Both in Japan and in the United States, the majority of players who bought a copy of one of the most recent Pokémon games were college students. It seems like many Pokémon players grew up with the games.

One of the most popular eras of Pokémon was ‘Generation 3,” which takes place in a place called Hoenn.

For the last several years, high definition remakes of the Hoenn games were Nintendo’s most requested games by fans. In November, those fans got their wish when “Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire” were released.

In each generation, they release games that are coupled together. The games play the same, with the same story and characters, but you can catch slightly different Pokémon in each game.

I opted to go with “Alpha Sapphire” for this generation of remakes.

Of course, calling the games remakes is a little bit of a stretch. While they do take inspiration from the original games, more has changed than stayed the same. There are new areas, an entirely new story, new game mechanics, and a lot of new characters. It still has the feel of the original games, but feels refreshed.

Some of the puzzles from the original games make an appearance, but have been slightly altered. For fans that have played the original games, it will offer an exciting new and nostalgic challenge.

A lot of players don’t like the new games though.

One of the biggest complaints is that in the original games, there are rare legendary Pokémon that are notoriously difficult to catch. Those Pokémon can be caught in Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby as well, but some of them are much easier.

One such Pokémon, Latias (or Latios depending on the game you choose) is practically given to you at the beginning of the game. However, I think it quickens the pace of the game while adding new challenges in other areas. I think the new games are much more polished and enjoyable to play overall.

For anyone who is considering buying the games, I highly recommend it. Just don’t judge it to the standards of the original games. It is an entirely new game, and one I enjoyed playing very much.
